Young Black Men in America: Stereotype or Fact

In the recent tragic story of a young man by the name of Trayvon Martin. There has been a mass outcry of injustice for the night in question. How does this tragic story influence young black males in America.

I have learned through culture, experience, and research there is a huge absent rate of fathers in the homes for African-American families. There is also a high percentage of single black mothers. Now, this is in no way to say there are no absent father rates in other cultures. However, for the purpose of this blog I will speak from an African-American culture that is part of my personal heritage.

There is a problem within the black community when young men of any race feel that is acceptable to wear your pants below your waist; There is a problem within the black community when you have a high percentage of young black men being locked up for child support, drugs, or crimes; There is a problem within the black community when having an education, being independent, or having friends outside of your race is looked down upon.....

In today's society, there are higher percentages of drug activity, more children under the age 10 that roam the streets unsupervised by a parent or guardian, more young black males that feel it is okay to play loud music that disrupts the neighborhood,etc....If you were to visit a middle or upper class neighborhood you would notice less of these activities. Why is this? What happened to biblical standards of parents rearing their children in the ways of God. What happened to respecting your community and loving your neighbors? Why does this epidemic seem more higher within predominately black neighborhoods or communities.

If a person is a law-abiding citizen that works and lives a decent life to provide for their families. Who wants to live in a neighborhood that is surrounded by environments as I described. Certainly not me!!

  1. Yes this is sad, if only people would realize exactly where the baggy-saggy look came from...

Prison - (now they may think this is "thug-cool")
The problem is that the origins of this is actually to show that you are available for an encounter.

The other thing about the loud music reminds me of a neighbor I used to have. The guy put 22" inch rims, booming system, and tinted the windows, however, smoke was coming out of the tail pipe.

Now having said all of that we should look to where the priorities of life are.
Those priorities should be in order:

GOD first and foremost that drives our life, followed by family, and then your neighbors. The Bible teaches us to love our neighbors and enemies.

With the case of the guy and the smoking car...
He really should have had a good foundation of a running car, before adding those luxuries.

If everyone lived by the Golden Rule - The world would be a far better place. This would apply to Christians, Non-Christians and Atheists where if we treated each other the way we would want to be treated. Most of the problems in the neighborhood would go away.

With this fast paced world people do not know their neighbors or do not take time to notice.

I can remember reading and hearing from great-grandmother about the Great Depression.

She told me- We did not have enough money to buy food, so we bartered with our neighbors and gave what we could to those in need. She would also tell me that people would not lock their doors and neighbors looked after one another. To even check in if they did not see them each day.

I can personally remember growing up my neighbors knew who my parents were. That is where part of the breakdown is. Even during the first and second world war, when the fathers were gone off to war the neighborhood stepped in to help raise the children.

  2. nice post, true but very sad for our children and grandchildren. Because it's the innocent ones that get caught in the cross fires. I have a son that was shot 7 times. because someone wanted to flex the fact they were gang banger and he was not. This was a neighborhood I once was very proud that I lived in. Now I don't even want to go there to visit family and friends. this child crawled and learned how to walk on these streets. Sadly to say its a lot of things that has gotten people to this point, and one of the greatest reasons is people are not teaching their children about God. I enjoy your blogs.
